Trident: Chained to routines
11/07/08 || theProphet
Sometimes you have to do reviews that you don’t want to do, either because of personal issues such as being left by your girlfriend and then finding out she used to fuck the drummer in your band who is also one of your closest friends, and that she from him contracted a V.D. which he in turn had gotten from fucking your parrot and German shepherd in a bizarre and obscene ménage à trois. OR, it’s because the album sucks, or both reasons, or something else entirely…
Anyways, I would say that Trident’s 2008 self-released effort is slightly below average. Like always when you hear a demo, you can immediately name at least twenty signed bands which are infinitely worse. Possibly even more, but it would be really silly to start name dropping metal bands every time you heard a demo, right? Fuck it, let’s just say that there’s nothing that will make Trident anyone’s favourite band, judging from this material. So what is this material then, I hear you ask?
Well, Trident plays self-proclaimed hardcore/metal, though while it’s safe to say it’s metal, I do not consider it very hardcore at all. Au contraire, this is some pretty melodic, groovy and accessible music, sorta like a softer Pantera. The songwriting is okay, especially since this kind of metal never aspired to be the most complicated as far as song- and riff structures go. Especially the opener, “The Wash”, is real solid. However a little more variety in the material is not too fucking much to ask for.
The actual performance is all tight and professional, but this is all fucked into oblivion once the absolutely atrocious vocalist enters the picture. Maybe it’s not him, but I fucking hate this kind of vocals in my metal, it’s part growl, part bark and all manure. To me it just sounds forced, like taking a shit while talking. Fuck it, you either growl, scream or, in some cases, sing normally, otherwise, game over. Also, the production, while being good on other points, makes it sound like the vocalist is standing in a different room than the rest of the band. This makes the vocals stand out from the music in an uncomfortable way, instead of being a part of it. I sense that this is about as much as it is eligible to write about some piss-poor fucking vocals, so I’ll just conclude this sorry excuse for a review…
If Trident got another vocalist, looked over the production and polished their songwriting skills a little they might be another b-league band from Finland that nobody would ever care very much about.
Note: The tracklist is all jumbled due to internet fucking shit up and the absence of real information on webpages and so forth.
